Moving is challenging and ranks high among life's stressors. As more people stay in their homes for longer periods, clutter can build up in every room and closet, making the idea of moving seem daunting. Family dynamics can add to the stress, and examining sentimental items can be emotionally exhausting when faced with packing everything for a move. Keep reading for steps to make your transition as smooth as possible.

First Step: Decide where you are going. Are you moving to a condo, a retirement home, or across the country to be closer to family? Once you have chosen your destination, it can help guide your decisions. Pick a date; the more time you have, the better. If you need help from family, don't hesitate to ask. Be aware that they have their own families, jobs, and hobbies, so they may not always have all the time you need. If you plan to hire professional help, book them as soon as possible to ensure a smooth process.

Once you have your destinations, date, and assistance arranged, it's time to start sorting. Use the 4-box method: Keep, Donate, Sell, and Discard. Go through this decision process for each item. Begin with easy categories and leave the sentimental, difficult items for later. Start in a room that offers a quick win to build momentum—such as the basement, laundry room, linen closet, or even the junk drawer. Once you get started, making decisions will become quicker.

Once you begin, follow the room-by-room plan. This approach will help you stay focused and limit the mess to one area at a time. You can complete it in approximately 30 days. Use these as a guide to stay on track: Week 1: Entry and Linens, Week 2: Bedrooms, Week 3: Living Room and Books, Week 4: Kitchen, Week 5: Paperwork and Sentimental Items.

When packing your belongings, ensure that you label boxes on at least two sides, indicating both the contents and destination. For example, label a box "Bedroom #2" for the books from the basement. Remember to book the elevator and coordinate with the moving company so they have sufficient time for unloading.

Create a move-day checklist to make sure you don’t forget anything. Pack an open first box with your medication, toiletries, chargers, the teapot and tea, as well as your pyjamas and a change of clothes. Pack your bedding in a suitcase so it's easy to find among the boxes, allowing you to make your bed quickly. The day will be hectic and very long, but it will pass soon. Stay hydrated and take a break when you can.
