November serves as a transitional month. Patio cushions and garden tools are stored away, while boots and blankets are brought out. The holidays are quickly approaching. In November, many of us experience a brief lull before the festivities begin, making it an ideal time to declutter and reset your home. A peaceful space now sets a relaxed tone in December. Here are simple, practical strategies to manage the clutter that accumulates during seasonal changes, without feeling overwhelmed.

5 Tips to Declutter Before December:

1) Conduct a “Summer Exit Audit." Before storing items, evaluate their condition and usefulness. Group items by category, such as outdoor cushions, gardening tools, sports gear, and pool or lake equipment. Keep only what was used this season or is likely to be used next spring. Donate duplicates, items that are outgrown, or pieces that no longer fit your space or lifestyle. Wipe, label, and store in clear bins so your future self in spring will thank you.

2) Create a Holiday Landing Zone. Designate one bin for gifts, one for wrapping supplies, and a separate bin for returns or exchanges. Keep essential tools, such as tape, scissors, pens, and a small notepad, together. Label each bin and assign a specific spot in a closet or under a bed. Decide on your décor limit now; for example, one large tote per room. If a new decoration arrives, an older one should go out. Keep a small “host kit” ready with napkins, candles, and spare tea towels so you’re not rummaging through the kitchen when guests arrive.

3) Photo Box Sorting for Rainy Days. During bad weather, brew some tea and sort through one shoebox of photos at a time. Ask yourself: Can I identify who is in this photo and where it was taken? Will anyone actually want this later, and if so, who will it be? Is it a duplicate, blurry, or very similar to another photo from the same event? Keep the best handful from each year, label them by year or occasion, and consider scanning your favourite photos. Recycle exact duplicates and unclear images. Less is more when memories are clearer.

4) Host a Seasonal Closet Swap. As you transition into fall and winter wardrobes, be honest with yourself about what you truly want to wear. Clothes you didn’t wear this summer probably no longer match your style, fit, or needs. Let go of pieces that don’t flatter or feel comfortable. Adopt a one-in, one-out rule for winter purchases. Organize a small clothing swap with friends to give quality clothes a second chance. Donation is excellent, and swapping can be environmentally friendly and enjoyable. 5) Implement a 15-minute daily reset. Small daily tidying routines outperform long weekend marathons. Identify one clutter hotspot each day—such as the entryway, kitchen counter, laundry area, or car trunk. Use a simple three-bag system: put away, donate, recycle. Keep a labelled donation bin near the door and schedule weekly drop-offs. Consistency is more important than perfection.
